Women's Alternate
and Informal Learning Pathways to Jobs in the IT
(Information Technology) Sector
(October 2002 - September 2006)
The purpose of this research project is to explore the
alternate and informal learning pathways that women use
to acquire jobs in the IT sector. Funded by the Initiatives
in the New Economic Program of SSHRC, this four-year project
is one in a series of case studies being undertaken by researchers
to explore the current situation of educational, training
and informal learning activities in the Canadian economy.
This project is being co-delivered in Toronto by ACTEW and
in Vancouver by Dr.
Shauna Butterwick at the University of British Columbia.
We already know that women are a minority within traditional
formal educational routes to access the IT sector (e.g.
engineering, mathematics and computer sciences) and our
hope is that this study will help fill some gaps in our
knowledge about how women learn about, and access, jobs
in the IT sector.
This research project is funded by the
Initiatives in the New Economic Program of the Social Sciences
and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). |
