ACTEW DELIVERS KEYNOTE AT WOMEN’S EMPLOYMENT FORUM

On July 14, ACTEW's Deanna Yerichuk opened the Women's Employment Forum in the Thorncliffe neighbourhood in Toronto. Deanna spoke to job seekers and career practitioners on labour market trends for Toronto, as well as providing an analysis of women’s issues and opportunities in entering Toronto's labour market. This forum, hosted by Toronto Training Board, MPP Kathleen Wynne, and Flemingdon Neighbourhood Services, among others, was the final in a series of collaborative information series on "Women at Work" that looks at issues relevant to women job-seekers and career practitioners in the GTA.

HELP SHAPE EMPLOYMENT ONTARIO WITH ACTEW

ACTEW is a member of the Service Delivery Advisory Group (SDAG), a committee of umbrella organizations representing the employment and training sector. The SDAG works to ensure that there is dialogue between MTCU and third-party delivery stakeholders on service design, implementation and delivery as the Province develops Employment Ontario. MTCU has a number of "Transition Projects" that will help to transform the current delivery system into Employment Ontario. These projects are an opportunity for community organizations to share expertise, either through ACTEW or another SDAG member, or by directly participating in a project working/reference group. Learn more about getting involved on the ACTEW Blog.

As we reported in June, Sherree Mahood, of MTCU’s Western Region, presented information on the next steps of Employment Ontario implementation. Detailed feedback from the service providers in attendance is now on the ACTEW blog.

Women's Advancement Slowed By Gender Stereotyping, Study Shows

According to a recent report by Catalyst, a non-profit research organization, gender stereotyping, one of the key barriers to women's advancement in corporate leadership, leaves women with limited, conflicting, and often unfavorable options no matter how they choose to lead. This report, the third in Catalyst's in-depth series, examines the pervasive and damaging effects of gender stereotyping in the workplace. The findings suggest that gender stereotypes lead organizations to routinely underestimate and underutilize women's leadership talent. Although multiple research studies show that men and women exhibit similar leadership styles, Catalyst's prior research indicates that men do not face the persistent gender stereotyping that frequently place women business leaders in "double-bind, 'no-win' dilemmas."

SURVEY ON TRANSPORTATION FOR WOMEN IN THE NORTH

Rural women are invited to participate in a survey on the challenges of getting to work, training, or employment services. The Guelph-based organization, Rural Women Making Change, is looking at how the lack of transportation affects the workforce participation of women living in small communities in northern Ontario. The project outcomes will be used in policy discussions at the local, provincial and federal levels, with the goal of improving women’s accessibility to employment and training in northern communities. Contact Siobhan O’Leary at olearys@uoguelph.ca to gain access to the survey.
