ACTEW RECEIVES MINISTRY OF ATTORNEY GENERAL FUNDING FOR "CONSIDERATIONS OF VIOLENCE" PROJECT

The Ministry of the Attorney General’s Ontario Victims Services Secretariat has funded ACTEW, in partnership with Springtide Resources, to develop and pilot workshops for employment practitioners on employment-related issues for abuse survivors. ACTEW and Springtide Resources will work to bridge the information gap between the career development and violence prevention sectors, and to develop and deliver a series of professional development workshops for front-line career development practitioners.

ACTEW's Strageic Planning Begins

ACTEW is embarking on a strategic planning and resource development process, funded through the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Through contributions and participation from our members and select key stakeholders, we will create a framework to support, sustain, and strengthen the employment and training sector servicing women in Ontario. This month ACTEW members can expect to hear from ACTEW as we gather information and resources that will inform this process.

ACTEW Brings Together Service Providers & Government

Through our Putting Women in the Picture project, ACTEW co-hosted two meetings in the last four weeks to discuss regional concerns about labour market development policy and the devolution of funds from Service Canada to the Province’s Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities through the Labour Market Development Agreement. Service providers from the Ottawa region met with all levels of government in May, while in June over 180 employment deliverers of the Golden Horseshoe area heard from MTCU. Surveying Employers on Intimate Partner Abuse & the workplace

Moving On To Success is an employment readiness-program for intimate abuse survivors, collaboratively run by ACTEW, YWCA Toronto, Springtide Resources, and Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies at York University. The YWCA is currently surveying employers through its LinkstoJobs Employer Network on workplace issues related to intimate partner abuse. Employers wishing to share their experiences and concerns about this issue are invited to contact mots@actew.org to access an online survey. The results of this research will shape resource packages and workshops for employers.

STUDY REVEALS – LITTLE CHANGE IN WAGE GAP

More young women are getting a university degree, which generally translates into a higher income, but they're having a hard time closing the wage gap with men. A Statistics Canada study released recently found university educated women in their 20s earned 18 per cent less than men from 1991 to 2001. This was only slightly better than in 1991, when women earned 20 per cent less than men. This gap narrowed only slightly despite the sharp increase in the proportion of young women with university degrees.

CHILD CARE & women's employment

As women enter the workforce in record numbers, childcare - or the lack of it - plays a key role in Ontario's labour market development. ACTEW's newest fact sheet in the series on women's employment issues provides statistics, facts and resources on Canada's child care system as it relates to working women and women looking for work. Learn how policies relate to the labour market in our June issue of InFocus, ACTEW's policy e-bulletin.
