ACTEW’s Latest Fact Sheet Release: Canadian Women’s Labour Patterns

ACTEW has just released a fact sheet focusing on Canadian Women’s labour patterns, based on an environmental scan ACTEW recently conducted for the Canadian Women’s Foundation. Women's work patterns are not the same as men's. While men's employment patterns have changed little, women's are changing dramatically. Thirty years ago, the participation rate difference between the sexes was 31%; it is now 8%. Women are more likely to have breaks in their work histories, perform unpaid caregiving at the expense of paid employment, work part-time and be in low-paying occupations.

Research Concluding for Moving On To Success (MOTS)

Over the last six months, ACTEW has conducted surveys and interviews with practitioners and employers on the impact of partner abuse on women's employment, job-seeking and the workplace. We thank all our respondents! The results of this research, integrated with feedback from YWCA's MOTS program staff, survivors' input and a literature review, will inform the project's Recommendation Report, available in March 2008. MOTS is an employment readiness-program for partner abuse survivors, collaboratively run by ACTEW, YWCA Toronto, Springtide Resources, and Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies at York University.

It was an exciting group of people concerned with how the women of Lambton County can be more fully supported towards economic security. Deanna opened up the day with a talk on the labour market challenges and opportunities facing women in Ontario, including stats and policy analysis, as well as an overview of the work MTCU is currently engaging in through building Employment Ontario.

Women Shut Out of EI: New Study

A new study conducted by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA) concludes that most women are getting shut out of Employment Insurance (EI) coverage in Canada. The gap between men's and women’s EI coverage is significant: 40 percent of unemployed men received EI benefits in 2004 while only 32 percent of unemployed women did. The study shows the likelihood of most women ever receiving unemployment benefits is slim, largely because EI doesn’t recognize that women have different patterns of paid work than men due to their family responsibilities. The study, “Women and the Employment Insurance Program”, can be downloaded from the CCPA web site.
